Have you been following the fun challenge Penguin Kids gave this month? It all started because Froggy's Birthday Wish by Jonathan London and illustrated by Frank Remkiewicz was released on March 10th! We were lucky enough to receive a review copy as well as two other Froggy books, Froggy Builds a Tree House and Froggy Gets a Doggy. Have you discovered the Froggy series yet? They are so fun. We are going to provide some general Froggy birthday party ideas as well as ones from each book. For even more Froggy birthday party ideas check out my Froggy Birthday Party Pinterest Board!
Well there are many frog themed party supplies, but there are not Froggy themed ones and since we like to make our own, we made some simple ones using white and black cardstock, gluestick, a 3-inch circle punch and a 1-inch circle punch and green party supplies from the Dollar Tree.
We literally glued the black 1-inch circles onto the white 3-inch circles (for the cake plate and cup we downsized our 3-inch circles). Then we glued our eyes onto the plates, cup and party hat. For the cup and party hat we used markers to draw a mouth for Froggy including his pink tongue. Hazel really liked the party hat! We used a sparkly green hat that we had.
We also made some Froggy balloon decorations. This could also be the base of a Froggy pinata. You can see how we made a pinata at home here. For a balloons we used a large green balloon and two small water balloons. To blow air into the water balloons I use a balloon pump since they do not always blow up easily. We taped the balloons on and then drew the black dots on for the eyes and added a mouth.
Hazel saw mine and insisted on making one as well. She drew her dots on before taping and that got the eyes a little off.
Froggy's Birthday Wish has all the makings of a birthday party since it is about one. First his party is a surprise party. Therefore a surprise party would be perfect. At the party they play pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey. This is easy enough to do. They eat cake and drink punch. For gifts he gets a skateboard, scooter and pogo stick. If you have these or can borrow some it might be fun to have a race either as a relay for each of them or each one against the other. Without them you could have a pretend pogo stick race with hopping with two feet together. His final gift which is his birthday wish is an orange circle pinata filled with chocolate covered flies. An orange circle pinata would be very easy to make following the tutorial here and just using a big circular balloon. For the chocolate covered flies consider serving chocolate covered raisins and labeling them chocolate covered flies.
Froggy Gets a Doggy is about a visit to the animal shelter. Froggy really wants a dog and so does his baby sister Polliwogilina. Their mother however has other ideas. She looks at the rabbits, the alligator, and mice. However when Froggy finds the cutest and sweetest dog, his mother cannot say no. Doggy is Froggy's responsibility. Froggy has to walk him, train him and feed him. Doggy plays fetch a bit strangely and runs into the house and comes out with pink underpants. To bring this book into the party one could play pin-the-tail-on-Doggy instead of a donkey. Make a sketch of Doggy as best as you can and give each child a tail. Another activity would be to have a basket of strange items including a pair of pink underwear and have each child pull something out of the basket while blindfolded. See who can find the pink underwear. At breakfast Froggy eats cereal with flies. Consider serving chex mix with raisins labeled cereal with flies.
Froggy Builds a Tree House is a book where Froggy gets the idea of building a tree house with his friends so they can play cards, tell jokes and order out for pizza without adults around. To bring this book into the party you can serve pizza with flies or pizza with chopped black olives (instead of the flies). Froggy wants his pizza to have extra flies. His non-frog friends are not particularly interested in the flies. Then of course play a card game and make sure there are plenty of jokes to be told. Plus it is a bonus if there is a treehouse for the kids to play in and/or have the party in. A craft could be building a birdhouse with wood and nails.
Some other ideas would be playing a game of leapfrog, serving flies on a log (think ants on a log), make origami jumping frogs using the tutorial on Itsy Bitsy Fun: How to Make an Origami Frog that Jumps, make a Funny Face Frog found on East Coast Mommy, make Hand Print Art: F is for Frog found on Crystal and Co., and for even more ideas check out 6 Froggy Birthday Party Ideas for Book Lovers on Kids Creative Chaos. I also made up some food labels if you want to use my ideas.
