I am always looking for good ways to bring religious lessons to Hazel at her level so she can truly understand them. Today I am going to share three books that do a wonderful job of this. They are all board books or board like books, but Hazel loves all of them!!
The first book is If Jesus Walked Beside Me written by Jill Roman Lord and illustrated by Amy Wummer. This book is the perfect book to build confidence in a child. Hazel often lacks a bit of confidence so I love how this book helps with it. The book goes through various children thinking of how they would feel if Jesus walked beside them. Things like riding a new bike, going on stage and a hand to hold when sick are used as the kids' examples. It reminds the child that Jesus brings safety, warmth and comfort as well as confidence. The story brings every day things most kids do and reminds them that Jesus is always there with them and they can be confident because of it. The pictures are beautiful and show Jesus as a friendly white man. It is such a beautiful and colorful book that brings home the simple lesson that Jesus is with you always and is always a prayer away.
The next book is God Knows You written by Michelle Medlock Adams and illustrated by Pauline Siewert. Throughout this fun book there are statements about how God knows you, loves you, etc. and then a lift-the-flap where a promise is from God along with the Bible verse where you can find the promise. This makes it perfect for older children as well since they can take the time to find the actual scripture in which the promise is made. And of course Hazel loves the lift-the-flap part of the book as well! The pictures in this book are fun and colorful and represent each statement well with an activity children might do any given day. It sends the important message that we are all God's children and He knows us and loves us.
Our third book for today's review is A Love Letter from God written by P.K. Hallinan and illustrated by Laura Watson. This book has a similar message as God Knows You, but is done in a completely different way. Throughout the pages there are different cut-outs (hearts on the cover) that give a peek of the next page or previous page once turned. The pictures fit with the page that they can be seen on as well as the page they are on. It brings a nice connection to the whole book and the reminder that the entire message is connected. The message of this book is God love you as you are and will provide and protect you. It is a reminder that all things come from God including friends. It even addresses when there are problems in life how God uses them to make us strong. Again the pictures in this book are colorful and fun. They are simple yet perfect for young children.
All three of these books serve as wonderful reminders that we are created by God, loved by God and that God and Jesus are there for us all the time. They are written for young children to really understand these lessons. I highly recommend them for all young children and even slightly older ones like Hazel.
