Have you read The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt and illustrated by Oliver Jeffers? If you have you will be excited to know that the companion book, The Day the Crayons Came Home, is coming out next week!! If you have not been introduced to these amazingly funny books, let me tell you a bit about them.
In The Day the Crayons Quit, Duncan goes to his desk to pull out his crayons but finds a pile of letters. Each crayon has written him a letter expressing the various issues the crayon has with Duncan. Some are overused and some are underused. Yellow and orange are in an argument as to who is the color of the sun. The pages are written by each crayon, so it is fun to read. The comments each color has are rather entertaining. We were introduced to this amazing book at a story time at Barnes and Noble. Hazel loves the book. When she found out we were getting a copy of it and the companion she could not wait for them to arrive!
In the companion, The Day the Crayons Came Home, all of the crayons ever left somewhere, broken and/or melted write a postcard/letter to Duncan. Some want to come home others want to leave and explore the world. One is very lost after being left behind on vacation. The crayons want to come home and have a place of their own. They each have an entertaining story. Imagine all the places you find crayons or pieces of them. Almost any you can think of are in this book. There is the broken crayon that is fixed by paper clip and the one stuck in the sharpener (pencil has to write his letter) as well as the one that gotten eaten by the dog and thrown back up. The postcards and stories are so creative and entertaining. This book is as amazing as the first one and just as funny if not more so. We love it!
The crayons now have their own website!! At the website you can read about the books, author and illustrator as well as download some activities (including some of the ones I am sharing) and you can make your own crayon "postcard". Hazel was very excited about this. She made the pink one. I liked the picture of yellow and orange melted and made a very unoriginal one.
I also chose one of the sayings already written and made this one.
They are fun!
With the books we were sent a lovely tote bag and poster to go with The Day The Crayons Came Home as well as a story time poster, a set of 20 postcards and a set of crayons.
I put Hazel's Every Crayon Counts Postcard on the blank postcard in the picture.
Both posters have activities on the back of them as well.
After photocopying the activities for Hazel I gave our public library the posters and post cards. The children's librarian is very excited to have a story time activity around this new book. Hazel worked on some of the activities so far. (She connected the dots in yellow since it was of the yellow and orange crayons.)
She used various colors on the maze so each color could find its way to its own home. Brown needs to follow the brown path.
These books are the perfect back-to-school stories. It makes you think about color in a new way as well as how a child cares for his/her craft supplies. We are having so much fun with these books!! These are must read books for every family and classroom. I hope you will check them out!!
