Today I get to share with you a look at the new book, At Home in the Father's House by John Sheasby with Ken Gire. This book shares John Sheasby experience as a pastor discovering his own distortions of God and the Bible. He also shares the discoveries he made to correct those distortions and finds ways to relate it to everyone's life.
In this book Sheasby focuses on his relationship with God and with his own earthly father. He connects the two since we call God our Father. In his own relationship he realizes he drew parallels between the two relationships and expected God to react the same way as his earthly father. His own father focused on the rules and laws more than the love and connection. Sheasby goes on to show how the laws were the Old Testament and the old covenant and how Jesus came to show us how God really is and what He really wants. God wants a loving relationship with all of us. Sheasby uses the scripture and in particular the parables to show this.
This book opened my eyes to some of my own distortions and confusions. It really made me think hard about what I believe and why. In the past ten years my own beliefs have been going towards this loving, caring relationship with God and trying to understand that it is not performance based. This book has enabled me to see this even more and I really enjoyed reading it. I would suggest this book to anyone who wants to put his/her own relationship with God into check. The book will open your eyes and certainly make you think more about what the Bible--the New Testament in particular--is sharing with us and how the life of Jesus really brought us a new covenant. I find it inspiring to read and think about. Sheasby even includes some self discovery activities like writing in a journal about yourself. This book relates to every Christian as well as anyone who wants to learn more about God and Jesus.
