Have you seen the pop-up cards lately in the stores? They seem to be the latest rage. Of course for eight plus dollars they are also very expensive. Today's book will help you make your own fun pop-up cards for any occasion!! The book is Pop-Up Cards by Emily Gregory.
This book has step by step instructions and templates to create thirty cards. My only complaint is that the templates are half the needed size, so you have to enlarge all of them. And for the Carousel as well as the Flying Swallow, the templates are in full color, so they need to be enlarged in color. I used my color printer to do this. The book is divided into three chapters as well as an introduction, basic tools and basic instructions. The chapters are Cuts & Folds, Tabs, Slots & Layers, and Disks & Spirals. I decided to try a card from each chapter and decided to try one of the bird cards in each chapter since Hazel has been on a bit of a bird kick lately. The card from Cuts & Folds I made was Bird Box. This involved an intricate paper cut. I will admit this is not one of my strengths. I changed the colors of the paper from what was suggested in the book and also did not include some of the cuts because I knew it would be too cut for me.
From the Tabs, Slots & Layers chapter I tried the Flying Swallow. Because of the full color template and trying to enlarge it, I did have a few issues with this one, but I think I resolved them.
The swallow actually moves with a tab on the front. To make this card one needs a sewing needle and thread as well to attach the bird and have it movable.
From the Disks & Spirals chapter I made the Bird in a Cage which is Hazel's favorite of the ones I made. I changed the colors for this card and made the bird and cage pink knowing Hazel would really love it. The one thing I don't like about this card is you have to pull the string to see the bird and cage. This one involved a paper cut as well.
The instructions in this book are pretty clear. The cards include things like hearts, castles, bicycles, flowers and more. There is really something for everyone. Overall it is a fun book that gives you the instructions that you need to make these beautiful handmade cards. I hope you will check it out.
