Have you begun your Summertime Fun yet? We have and today's post is all about bringing learning and fun together! Today we are sharing a new book by some of my favorite bloggers called The 101 Coolest Simple Science Experiments by Rachel Miller, Holly Homer, and Jamie Harrington. These three amazing women are the team behind Kids Activities Blog and the Quirky Momma Facebook Page. If you don't know them you probably will love them too!
How cool is this--even the cover glows in the dark?? Now I showed the book to Hazel and asked her to mark a few experiments she wants to try. She gave up before the fourth chapter because she was just marking every page. Then she started looking for experiments she could do on her own. Each experiment in this book has a mess meter and whether adult supervision is required. Some of these experiments she can do on her own. Then the experiments list the supplies needed as well as the time for preparation and the experiment, the instructions, the outcome and why it worked. Then there are variations, tips and Did You Knows?. Plus many have photographs. It is such a fun book. And yes this is one we will be keeping so Hazel can work through all the experiments. After all a book that teaches learning is fun is always great!
The book has four chapters: Kitchen Chemistry, Physics and Making Things Move, Exploring the World and The Human Body. Each chapter has many simple experiments that get the kids thinking about science and how the world works (after all that is what science explains). We of course had to try some experiments so I could tell you how easy the instructions are to follow. The first experiment we tried was Soda Eruption. Now Hazel was a bit afraid to be too close so she was in charge of pictures, but did not get any. Sorry!! Next we tried Exploding Baggies.
We tried this a few times. The one in the picture is the only one that the bag "exploded" open. We however used our not so successful attempts to explore more. We discovered adding more baking soda did not cause much to happen however each time more vinegar was added the bags would fizz more. Both of these experiments were done outside in case of mess.
Next we tried the Dancing Candies Experiment. We discovered if you put the candies in too early or use Lifesavers the candies dissolve before the water begins boiling. We also had trouble telling seeing once the water was boiling so I did not get any good pictures. Sorry!! However you can see Hazel watching for movement in the pan.
Hazel really wanted to try the Mixing Oil and Water experiment, so I let her. We used a small white dish for this so not to waste oil. The first picture shows them not mixing and the second picture is where the secret ingredient is added to get them to mix. She really loved this one!
The last one we have tried thus far is Seeing Your Pulse. This was a neat experiment and the picture is blurry due to the movement of the pulse. It was fun to talk about what your pulse is and how and why we can feel it on our wrists.
Needless to say we definitely recommend The 101 Coolest Simple Science Experiments for any time of the year and especially for some Summertime Fun and extra learning in the summer. We hope you will check out this amazing book!
