This year for our Hispanic Heritage Month post I thought we would share a bit about artwork from Mexico. Mexico is the country of the month for Global Learning for Kids, so we have been looking at it quite a bit this month. More posts to follow on it. In previous years we have looked at Frida Kahlo, papel picado, Jose Guadalupe Posada and Juan Quezada. We found even more books at the library about Frida Kahlo.
And of course looking at Frida Kahlo leads to a look at Diego Rivera. There are many books at the library, but here is one we have looked at.
Now if you have young children here is a great series of books that feature the artwork of various Mexican artists. These books are bilingual with very simple words that are perfect for young kids and early readers who are trying to learn either English or Spanish.
We also discovered the Aguilar sisters this year. We started with Josefina by Jeanette Winter. Then we found another book from the series above that shares the clay figures made by the Aguilar sisters.
Here is one of Josefina's figures called Frida. The book Josefina describes the entire yard filled with beautiful statues like this. Can you imagine?
The other art we discovered this year the artwork by the Huichol Indians. They are native Mexicans in the Sierra Madre Mountains of Mexico. They are descendants of the Aztecs. They are known for the beautiful beaded work and string/yarn work. (Source)
I saw many tutorials to make our own yarn artwork like this one. Hazel and I had fun doing this. We made our own designs. I drew a bird and Hazel did a butterfly, but we switched part way through in the gluing of the yarn.
There are so many styles of Mexican artwork--clay, wood, painting, string, beads and more! The colors are usually bright and the work is so fun.
We are so excited for our FIFTH annual Hispanic Heritage Month series and giveaway! Through the month (September 15 - October 15), you'll find great resources to share Hispanic Heritage with kids, plus you can enter to win in our great giveaway and link up your own posts on Hispanic Heritage!
