A couple of winters ago New England had a record breaking amount of snow mostly in February. A couple of weeks ago I was afraid we were having another year like that, however this past week has had us all feeling spring. But during the record breaking winter I did a series called Dreaming of Hawaii, just to think of some place sunny and warm. Hawaii is one of the top place I want to visit. Today's book shares a true story Hawaii and enables my Hawaii dreaming again. It is Honey Girl: The Hawaiian Monk Seal by Jeanne Walker Harvey and illustrated by Shennen Bersani.

Hawaiian monk seals are endangered and they often stay near islands that do not have people on them. Therefore it is unusual to see one and it is considered lucky to see one. However there is one that seems to enjoy being near people. She often visits near the North Shore of O'ahu. She comes around so much that the people named her Honey Girl. She also has the nickname of Super Mom since she has had seven pups. She is now a grandmother. This amazing animal also got injured by a fishhook and it had become infected. The scientists brought her to various places to help her. She needed surgery and then to recover. After thirteen days she was well enough to be released in the wild again.
Honey Girl's story is amazing and this book does a wonderful job of telling it. The importance of each event is shared. The fact that she has had seven children helps the numbers of Hawaiian monk seals grow. After losing half her tongue she is able to recover thanks to the scientists who rescued her and released her again. Her comfort with humans has encouraged people to learn more about these amazing animals and work even harder to rescue them.
At the end of the book are pages about Hawaiian monk seals. There is a lot of information shared on these pages. This book is perfect for learning about these endangered animals. There is even information about conservation as well as rescue and rehabilitation of the Hawaiian monk seals. I love how the book shares how much the humans around Honey Girl cared for her. I also found the illustrations to be very realistic and detailed. They are beautiful as well!

I truly enjoyed this book and loved learning about Honey Girl as well as all Hawaiian monk seals. I love these type of books that tell the story of one and give information about the species. Plus it is about a Hawaiian animal and I love learning about Hawaii!! I can recommend this book to anyone who loves animals, Hawaii or just learning. It is perfect to use in a homeschool or classroom setting as well. I hope you will check out this fun and amazing book!
