Disclosure: I was sent these books free of charge in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.
This week I have been sharing various chapter books for summer reading for different ages. We have shared books that inspire authors and illustrators, chapter books for grades 1-3, chapter books for grades 2-5 and now chapter books for grades 3-7. I have to say that one of these books has been my favorite summer read! We will start with that one. It is Walking with Miss Millie by Tamara Bundy.
Alice is the narrator in this book. She and her mother and brother have just moved in with her grandmother in Southern Georgia. Her grandmother can no longer live safely alone since her memory is failing her. Alice has many concerns about this move and does not think it will last. After all her father always returns eventually and he should be coming soon to take them back to Ohio. However he continues to disappoint her. She finds a friend in the most unusual place. Her grandmother's next door neighbor is a black woman who many in the neighborhood do not like, but after Alice is rude to her, her mother makes her go and apologize to her and see if there is anything she can help her with. Well Miss Millie needs help walking her dog, Clarence, only Clarence won't walk unless Miss Millie takes him, so Alice and Miss Millie walk Clarence. Their bond grows and slowly Alice learns more about this amazing woman who lost a brother to the Civil Rights Movement and Alice witnesses the nastiness of racism. This book has so much in it from civil rights, dysfunctional families, disabilities (Alice's brother is disabled) and more. Through the stories and talking Miss Millie helps Alice come to terms with her new situation and find friends as well. It is an amazing book and one I truly think every one should read!!
Our next book is the first in a series. It is Jack and the Geniuses at the Bottom of the World by Bill Nye the Science Guy and Gregory Mone. The second book comes out in September so this summer is the perfect time to get hooked in this series! Jack and is adopted foster sister and brother are living on their own in New York City. His brother, Matt, and sister, Ava, are geniuses. When they meet and begin working for Hank their life changes a bit. They go to a science competition in Antarctica and find a mystery to solve there. This book combines adventure with science and technology. It is perfect for a bit of STEM in the summer reading! The characters are engaging and lovable and the story is fast moving and beyond the imagination in some parts. This is such a fun book and I cannot wait for the next one!
Our next book is the third book of Disney Descendants Novels. It is Rise of the Isle of the Lost by Melissa de la Cruz. Now I will admit I am not a follower of the Descendants. We have not watched the movie or read any of the other books. I also only skimmed this one. Mal, daughter of Maleficent and Uma, daughter of Ursula, struggle to find Triton's powerful trident that has gone through the barrier to the Isle of the Lost. The once close friends are not competing against each other and want the power that comes with the trident. Who will find it?
Now as I said I have not followed the Descendants in anyway. I however felt myself pulled in by this book. It is engrossing and the characters are well developed. It is such an interesting story and it is a good read.
I hope you will check out these great books. Some other books we have reviewed for this age level are Castle Hangnail, Bronze and Sunflower, Treasury of Glorious Goddesses, The Great Treehouse War, Matchstick Castle, Short, Saraswati's Way, Summerlost, Hidden Figures Young Reader's Edition, and these
