Picture Books that Teach

Disclosure: I was sent these books free of charge in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.

Today I am sharing some books for the younger kids. They are all picture books and each have a bit of a lesson or concept in them. The first book is Double Take! A New Look at Opposites by Susan Hood and illustrated by Jay Fleck.

In this book opposites are looked at and the overall message is how sometimes the person's perception changes the opposites a bit. It is a fun book with cute and simple illustrations. The words are also very simple but the concept of perception is important. The suggested ages are 3 to 7, but I would say it is more 3-6. Hazel was definitely beyond this concept as it was presented in the book. However the story is fun and easy to read.

Our next book is My Kicks A Sneaker Story! by Susan Verde and illustrated by Katie Kath.

Do you have a favorite pair of shoes? What happens when they get too worn to look good and your mom makes you go shoe shopping to replace them? That is the concept of this book. In this story a young boy does not want to give up his old sneakers. They have so many memories of the fun he has had in them from climbing trees to learning to tie shoes. However when his mother finds a pair he really likes will he be willing to make the change? The pictures in this book are colorful and fun and the words are easy to read. It is the perfect book for a child who needs to learn to tie shoes or one who doesn't like to change his/her shoes for new ones. The suggested ages are 5 to 7 and I agree with that one.

Our next book is I Lost My Sock! by P. J. Roberts and illustrated by Elio.

In this simple book fox tells ox he has lost his sock and ox keeps finding various socks for him to see if it is the one he is missing, but they don't match. It is a fun book about matching and has a funny ending as to where the sock is. This book is suggested for 3 to 5 year-olds. I agree with this recommendation. It is a an easy book and is very cute.

Our next book is about growing up. It is This Bear's Birthday by Alyssa Satin Capucilli and illustrated by Lorna Hussey.
It is Bear's birthday and he wants to do all the preparations by himself for his party, but he discovers that some things cannot be done by just him. Luckily Bear has his family and friends to help. This book is perfect for the kid who is getting old enough to want to try things on his or her own. The suggested ages are 2 to 6. The illustrations are beautiful--colorful and fun.

Our next book is Wet by Carey Sookocheff. Sometimes it is fun to get wet.

How do you like to get wet? Do you go slowly into the pool or jump right in quickly? When do you get wet? What gets wet? These are the questions this book answers. It is very easy to read. The suggested ages are 4 to 8. I think it is more like 4-6. The pictures are simple as well.

Our next book takes us to France. It is Escargot by Dashka Slater and illustrated by Sydney Hanson.

The narrator of this book is a French snail named Escargot. He shares how special he thinks snails are but also how others don't seem to like snails as much as he wishes. He tries to make the reader find snails to be his or her favorite animal. This book is suggested for ages 4 to 6. This is a good recommendation. Hazel and I however enjoyed it because it was full of humor and made us laugh. You can learn a bit about snails and a bit about French culture and language.

Our final book is Tractor Mac Worth the Wait by Billy Steers.
Farmer Bill is liking how his watermelons are looking this year. The farm animals are too. The pigs however get a little too excited. While trying to help they begin to dream about the harvest and end up ruining the plants. However when they find a small melon growing in their pen they now know to wait and be patient with the plant. With the help of Tractor Mac and the other animals they are able to grow a perfect melon. This is the perfect book for kids who like animals, farms or trucks/tractors. The suggested age is 2 to 5. It is a cute book that teaches a bit about patience.

Well that is it for today. I hope you will take the time to check out these fun picture books for your younger kids!!
