Are you ready for the solar eclipse tomorrow? We are getting ready for it. Steve showed us how to set up his telescope to see the eclipse indirectly so we do not need the glasses (which he does not trust). Then we did a few crafts and made a few snacks. The idea for our craft came from NASA Eclipse Activity Guide. (This guide has many activities including information about the eclipse and lessons on it.) The craft is very easy. You need dark paper, chalk and a roll of masking tape or some other circle template.
To make the basic one we held the roll of masking tape down and traced it with white chalk. We made the line thick by using the side and coloring around it a bit. Messier is better for this art. In the next one we glued a black circle on top o of the white circle. We also folded the paper in half to make a card.
Just to see how it would come out I tried using a white chalk marker. I think the regular chalk is better though.
Hazel and I are working on another craft idea. Hopefully we will work out the details tomorrow morning and try it.
We also made Sun Cookies from DIY Sun Science. I love how they teach about the sun from the solar granules (the red and yellow sprinkles) to the solar prominences (represented with the Twizzlers). The M&M's are the pairs of sunspots. We were going to use slice and bake cookies but did not like our options at the store so we bought a package from the bakery there.
We also had the idea of using vanilla frosting and black decorative frosting to make eclipse cookies. Hazel and I each made a full eclipse one and I made a partial one since New England is suppose to see about a 65% eclipse.
We literally frosted the cookies with white frosting and then used the black tube to make a circle on it or the partial circle for the partial eclipse. Aren't these the perfect snack for tomorrow?
