Today I get to share with you one of the Pack-n-Go Girls Adventures. We had the pleasure of reviewing one a few years ago. So I was excited to get a new one to review. Today we are sharing Mystery of the Min Min Lights by Janelle Diller and illustrated by Adam Turner.
On this adventure is Wendy, a Chinese American girl from San Francisco. She is with her mother in Australia for six months. Luckily for her she befriends Chloe and Jack, the kids next door. They invite Wendy to their sheep station in the outback. While there they have a few incidents of seeing min min lights and are wondering what is happening to the missing sheep. Throughout the story Wendy (and the reader) is learning about Australia, the slang and the outback. This book is such a fun way to explore Australia from home. At the back of the book there is information about Australia including a map, facts, weather, food including a recipe, and a table of Australian slang and what it means. Then there are pages to record things like where to go, what to do, what to pack, etc. It is perfect for planning your own trip.
I love how these books take diverse kids and have them explore a new country with a new friend in the country. There is always a mystery to solve and and adventure to be on. This one is a fun adventure in a place we would love to explore. Now at a young age Hazel wrote to a pen pal in Australia, so it is a country we have explored from afar. It is also a place we really want to visit at some point.
We decided to try the recipe for easy lamingtons. We couldn't find the pound cake at the grocery store but used sliced butter cake. I used a bit of frosting to hold two pieces together and cut them into squares, but the cake crumbled when dipped into the icing for the lamingtons. We also had coconut flakes instead of shredded so the flakes stuck a bit much.
They are not pretty, but they are delicious. All three of us enjoyed them.
