Do you ever wonder how other countries celebrate Easter? I find it so interesting to see what other people do for this important Christian holiday. Today I am going to share some traditions in Bermuda. First a bit about Bermuda.
Bermuda is a British territory. It is self-governing with its own constitution and government. It depends on Britain for defense and foreign relations. It consists of 181 islands but is often referred to as one. It is known for its pink sanded beaches and cerulean blue water.

Good Friday
Now the most interesting part of the Easter celebration actually happens on Good Friday. Good Friday is the day that Jesus was crucified. On Good Friday head over to Horseshoe Bay Beach to see the Annual Kite Festival. There are competitions for the largest, smallest and more of homemade kites.Bermuda kites are made a special way. They are often a hexagon and larger ones can be octagons. Making them is full of geometry!! The shape is made with sticks and often then string is strung around them. Finally colorful tissue paper is woven into the strings. Aren't they beautiful?

I found this tutorial on YouTube.
All of these beautiful kites got me to thinking of a craft. I took some wooden flat sticks. (I didn't have any Popsicle sticks in my supplies.) I glued three together to form the frame of a hexagon.
After the glue dried I took crepe paper streamers and folded pieces in half and glued them along to form the hexagons. With the pink one I was trying to do it wrapping, but it was easier to just glue and looked about the same.
I glued a hexagon cut from red crepe paper to be the center. What do you think? They also remind me of God's eye crafts I made as a child with sticks and yarn. I may have to go try one again.
Food
Often food consists of codfish cakes and hot cross buns. As the YouTube video shows below they are a common on Good Friday. I did find this recipe for hot cross buns.Hot Cross Buns By Lausanne Morgan, U.S. Air Force [Public domain], via Wikimedia Commons |

After church people celebrate with Easter brunch with family and friends. There are egg hunts for the kids and sometimes visits from the Easter Bunny. For more of a view of Easter in Bermuda, check out this YouTube video.
