Do you have a child who wants to learn how to use your sewing machine? I do. Hazel really wants to use my machine. I have been trying to figure out the best way for her to learn. I found the perfect book to help. It is The Best of Sewing Machine Fun for Kids by Lynda Milligan and Nancy Smith.
This book teaches the child the parts of the sewing machine and has various activities to teach how to use the machine. The first activities are things to practice and get use to the machine. There are also puzzles like crosswords, mazes and word searches. The beginning pages also teach about safety.
By the way a seasoned sewer (and grandmother) suggested having Hazel wear safety goggles when using the machine. Kids' eyes are closer to the needle than ours and there can be mistakes like a broken needle flying. Just passing on some more safety advice. The book uses sewing on paper at first. In fact the first sewing activity is without thread, so you are not wasting expensive supplies. There are also lessons on controlling the machine like these peaks and waves.
I love this maze (below) where you sew the way!! There are also connect the dots to sew. How fun is that? And what creative ways to learn to make turns and various shapes with the machine.
There are also puzzles just to do with a pencil that help instill the various lessons.
There are also check points with lists of questions to make sure the reader is getting the ideas.
Then there are projects to learn various skills including using fusible web and other products.
I love how they make the projects customizable as well. The patterns are in the book and there are choices for the shapes of eyes and such for the example above. There are so many wonderful ideas in this book and great lessons for the beginner. I can't wait to have Hazel try some of these fun projects. I hope you will check it out as well as some of the other great products at C&T Publishing.
