Today is Mother's Day here in the United States. We have had a bit crazy of a week, but it did involve some fun crafts that are great crafts for Mother's Day and can be adapted for other gifts like teacher gifts, Father's Day and birthday gifts!
Hazel's school had a mother son event this weekend. Since I run their PTA I ahd to be there. We had a craft station where the boys got to make framed pictures. They each got an 11 x 14" cardstock sheet for the backing. Then they chose from various fonts and colors of the words: "Mom," "Mother," or "Mama." Then there were the same fonts and colors that said: "You are my..." Once they picked these they went to a table that had various letters found or made in nature. There were suggested words but the kids got very creative. After they finished they were given a frame. I brought home supplies for Hazel to make it at home. She is still working on what word she wants but I think she is going to do "sunshine."
While she was thinking I tried a few out. The "R" I had was more of a "P" and I used the "V" as a "U." I got the leftover letters so I didn't get all of them. You can take your own or Google "nature letters" and there are many out there that are free. I do not know where the person in charge of the craft got these, so I do not know if they have copyrights or anything. I was also thinking of doing it on a canvas for cost. If I did this, I would cover it with Mod Podge to seal the paper.
After the sun came out today Hazel and I went outside to look for letters of our own. Here are some we found in our yard and neighborhood.
It was a fun activity to do together. We also pulled out solar print paper and tried to make some prints with Mom and Hazel.
We tired each twice but they did not turn out that well. The sticks kept moving on us. I was glad it still worked since we haven't used it since 2012. We will try them again soon though.
Our other big Mother's Day activity was having a tea party. I promised Hazel we would have one. We bought a few cookies from Whole Foods' cookie bar and made different kinds of cucumber sandwiches. Some even have roast beef or ham on them.
She was so excited to have time with me. I promised her I would use the mug she made me for Mother's Day. She actually made me two since the first one ended up having a crack in the handle. I used this one though since I haven't put the other one in the oven yet.
Our local Capital One Cafe was offering this craft all week for people to make a gift for Mom. The first one she made had all the nice things like "Best Mom Ever" and "#1 Mom" on a trophy. The second one was a bit of a joke since she put "Maybe always right" and then a big "Maybe" with an arrow to the "right." Unfortunately she wrote "alway" instead of always. I haven't found my paint markers for her to correct it, which is why I haven't put it in the oven. To make them use an oil paint marker and a ceramic mug. Then preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Put it the oven for 30 minutes at 350. Then turn the oven off but leave the mug in the oven for another 30 minutes. This should keep the paint on the mug even when washed, but handwashing is suggested.
