Did you know that September is National Sewing Month? For free sewing projects be sure to check out NationalSewingMonth.org. It only seems right to share an amazing sewing resource with you in September. I am going to share a book that is amazing for the beginner sewer or for people who want to improve their sewing skills like myself. It is the new edition of The Sewing Book by Alison Smith.
This amazing book starts with all the sewing tools. The details in this book are wonderful. Do you know the different types of scissors for sewing? Or what about the differences between all the needle types?
After going through all the tools including sewing machines and more comes the fabrics. Smith goes through all the types of fabric--wool, cotton, linen, silk, leather and suede, and man-made fabrics. Then she goes into fabric construction. Next comes help with reading and using patterns. There is even steps to alter patterns. Next comes techniques. There are instructions for different stitches in hand sewing with lots of photographs of each step and then there are machine stitches and seams. There are instructions for all sorts of finishes for seams. Then there are other techniques for sewing and interspersed with them are projects to try and master these techniques.
The projects have very clear instructions and lots of photographs of the different steps.
This book even has a section on professional techniques. There are instructions for things like a jetted pocket and boned bodices. This book has many instructions in it for even a well seasoned sewer. My only complaint is that many of the patterns in the book need to be enlarged by large percentages (400%) and they are not pull-out.
Otherwise this book is full of great projects to learn different sewing techniques or improve on what knowledge you have. I hope you will check it out! And for more sewing ideas be sure to check out these sewing options from DK Publishing, C&T Publishing, and Leisure Arts.
