Can we talk about immigration? I mean it is all over our news. In fact in many ways we can say immigration has shut down our government. But let's look at the positive side of immigration instead of all the bad news our politicians are throwing around. (And in my humble opinion I don't think any of Congress or the President should be paid during the shutdown. In fact I think their salaries and health care should be going to the out of work federal employees, but I don't like to talk about politics too much.) I have an amazing book to share with you today. The book today is First Generation: 36 Trailblazing Immigrants And Refugees Who Make America Great by Sandra Neil Wallace and Rich Wallace and illustrated by Agata Nowicka.
Ok, the title says it all. This book gives brief biographies of 36 immigrants and refugees who did something to make America better. The 36 people have come from all over the world and throughout history to current times. They also include all sorts of careers from music and art to sports to science and politics. Some are really famous like Albert Einstein and others I hadn't really heard of like Razia Jan. Each person has an illustration of him or her and then a page (two column) biography as well as a quote. Then there is a green box that gives some fun facts about the person. There are people who fought for civil rights to the man who started Google. The one I found most touching was Meb Keflezighi. Perhaps it is because his story is part of my own life. He was at the Boston Marathon the year the bombs were set off but he had left the area shortly before they went off. As a result he knew he had to run the marathon the next year and win it. He wrote the names of the victims of the bombing on his number and used them for inspiration to win. He was the first American to win the Boston Marathon in thirty years.
Everyone has a story. Each life is a story. However these 36 people did something with their life to make the United States a better place and for some the world. Whether it was through entertainment or politics or science or other ways each person made a difference and we should take the time to learn about them and honor them and perhaps if everyone does it will help calm some of the tensions in our society today.
