Hazel and Steve went to the Father Daughter Snow Ball this weekend. Back in January Hazel asked me to make her a dress for it. I like making her a dress because I can control it a bit and make sure it is age appropriate and modest. Let's face it the fashion out there for tweens is not always age appropriate and it is hard to find if it is. Therefore, I'm happy to make her something. We looked at patterns on line and then I pulled out my supply that I have stocked up when they go on sale at Joann Fabrics and she picked Simplicity 8271 view B.
She did not want to go with me to pick fabric, but asked for a light pink or light purple. I started by looking for the lace. I found a pink lace with little flower shaped sequins on it. Then I picked fabrics to match it.
I of course waited for the last minute to make the dress. The pattern was relatively easy to make except for the fact that it told me to sew part of the center back seam and then in a few steps said I should not have sewn that seam until after the zipper was in. And because of this mistake it took me three times to get the zipper in and it is not in well. Plus of course the dress fabric shows every mistake. Ugh!! At least the front came out well.
Hazel was very happy with the dress though. But by the end of the night her underarms were bothering her where they rubbed against the lace. I had lined the entire dress in a nice cotton, but couldn't control there and with her sensitive skin it was very irritated after only a few hours.
For her hair I used a style from an American Girl video. It came out in one of their emails and suggested as a style for their new Girl of the Year, Blaire Wilson. The called it something like the waterfall twist. We don't have Blaire and are very sad that the Boston store is closing next month. However I tried the style on a couple of Hazel's dolls and she wanted me to try it on her. We both are happy with how it came out. I also used a curling iron to give her hair a bit of curl. With some fun pink and sparkly nails she was all set to go. Since I run the whole event I was there as well. Everyone had a great time. Does your daughter(s) go to a father daughter dance?
