Welcome to Crafty Weekends!! Life here has been busy, but I have exciting news. Starting tomorrow Hazel is an official writer/book reviewer here at Crafty Moms Share. Since I have gotten so behind on my reviews and many of the books are for Hazel's age level (or younger) she is going to start writing her own reviews. The first one will be published tomorrow!! Today we are sharing a book that is written for tweens. It is from our favorite kids' sewing series--Sewing School. This one is Sewing School Fashion Design by Amie Petronis Plumley and Andria Lisle.
In this Sewing School book there are basic designs and then extras to add and make the clothing your own. There are patterns to make a top, skirt and shorts with variations available to make the top into a dress and more. Plus there are clothes for girls and for boys. The book starts with instructions on how to use the book and basics about sewing from what to have in your sewing kit to fashion rules and more. Then come the three basic clothing tutorials and then some additions to add to your fashions like ruffles, collars, and more. Finally there are three extras--a bow tie, hat and apron. Next there are skill builders for the beginning sewer and of course there are the patterns.
I decided to give it a try and Hazel asked for a skirt. I tried the A+ skirt and I added some pockets. I also added some ribbon and lace to each pocket.
Hazel likes how it came out. I can see her wearing it this summer. The pattern is very easy to make and the pockets are easy to add on. I love how the instructions include photos for every step and make it so much easier for a tween to learn how to sew.
The book also has basic sewing skills reviewed/taught to the new sewers. One variation on the skirt is to add a zipper so there is a section to review how to sew a zipper into it.
The projects are fun and relatively simple. They have many fun ideas including the modern poodle skirt. I haven't shown it to Hazel yet to see if she wants one so I didn't try it and the truth is I want her to make her own clothes with this book.
Besides the fun fashion designs there are ideas like this DIY Fashion Show as well. This book is just fun and colorful and shows the creativity of kids. Plus I love that it is teaching the important skills of sewing.
