It is hard to believe Multicultural Children's Book Day is at the end of the week! I am so excited to see all the different reviews. How about you? Today we get to share another amazing book with you for it. This one is actually being released next week. The book is Dictionary for a Better World: Poems, Quotes, and Anecdotes from A to Z by Irene Latham and Charles Waters and illustrated by Mehrdokht Amini.
This book is done in a dictionary format in the fact that it shares words in alphabetical order. The words are chosen by being words to make the world a better place. It includes words like compassion, peace, voice, hope, ally. Each word is represented with a poem. There are many different types of poems in this book. The type of poem is described with each poem. There are types like acrostic, cinquain, ekphrasis, haiku, limerick, ode and so many more. Some I have heard of and others I hadn't. After the poem and type there is a quote and the authors take turns sharing stories to go with the words. Finally there is something for the reader to try in hopes of making the world a better place.
I love that the book provides such amazing words to think about and shares different types of poems. Hazel's class just did a poetry unit and looked at different types of poems. I wish I had given this book to her teacher before it because it is perfect for a classroom poetry unit. The poems are interesting as are the stories. I love the Try It! section as well. If everyone who read this book tries just a few of the suggestions the world will be a better place!
To go with this book I would suggest choosing a one of words and poem types and try writing that type of poem about the chosen word. Switch it around in a classroom or even make it random by writing the types of poetry on paper (or numbering them) and doing the words the same way and picking them randomly.
Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2020 (1/31/20) is in its 7th year! This non-profit children’s literacy initiative was founded by Valarie Budayr and Mia Wenjen; two diverse book-loving moms who saw a need to shine the spotlight on all of the multicultural books and authors on the market while also working to get those book into the hands of young readers and educators.
Seven years in, MCBD’s mission is to raise awareness of the ongoing need to include kids’ books that celebrate diversity in homes and school bookshelves continues.
