Global Kids: 50+ Games, Crafts, Recipes & More from Around the World -- Multicultural Children's Book Day Review

For today's multicultural review I am sharing a neat set of cards to teach kids about different cultures of the world. It is Global Kids: 50+ Games, Crafts, Recipes & More from Around the World by Homa Sabet Tavangar and Sophie Fatus.  

This is a deck of cards that are divided into five categories: create, play, eat, celebrate, and help out. The cards have information about countries and cultures and share something to make or do to learn about the culture. The deck helps kids explore over 50 countries and cultures. 

The cards begin with creating a pretend passport. After all if the kids are going to explore the world they need their passports! I decided to try a different create card. I explored the Maasai culture in southern Kenya and northern Tanzania. 

They are known for their beautiful beadwork. They make special collars for brides, leaders and such. Each color of bead has a special meaning and each collar is unique. The cards simplified the meanings and the craft to making a bracelet and shares the simplified meanings by color of bead.

I searched through our beads to gather enough of the correct colors to make the bracelet. I have given most of our pony beads away. I love that this craft uses supplies many kids will have at their ready and is easy enough to make. For more on Kenya and even photos of some Maasai collars be sure to check our previous posts. 

The play cards have different activities from making and flying a kite like the sample one above. (For more kite ideas be sure to check out these posts.) I love how there are activities like dance, playing versions of tag and other games. Almost all of them require recycled materials or common childhood toys like a ball. 

The eat cards vary with activities as well as recipes. There are recipes for things like Native American soup, fruit smoothie, tea, ice cream toppings, and jollof rice as well as activities and games like eating with chopsticks, picnic play, discovering where food is from and more. 

The celebrate cards share different holidays and holiday traditions from around the world. Each one shares a holiday or tradition and has a craft, recipe or activity to try to see how the tradition or holiday is celebrated. So are you ready to try some new holidays or versions of holidays? The sample card shares the beautiful pysanky from Ukraine. (See more on the Ukraine including more on pysanky here.) Some of the holidays include the French version of April Fool's Day, Mother's Day, first day of school, birthday and so much more! What is really neat is many of the cards share more than one culture with a different activity to go with the holiday. The sample one shares a Greek Easter tradition. 

The final category is help out cards. This category is a huge variety of things from picking up litter to making worry dolls and tracking water use. These cards will help kids do things for their community, themselves, and the world. 

I love how these cards give kids actual things to make and do to learn about cultures and how to be a better citizen in the world. These cards are amazing for a class as well as a family who wants to teach kids about the world. They are suggested for ages 5 and up. I hope you will check them out!
