Intrepids -- Middle School Book Review -- Multicultural Childrens Book Day

Do you like science fiction and fantasy? I never really consider myself a lover of either genre but I think I am fooling myself because the fantasy books I have reviewed here I love and here is another great one! It is Intrepids by Diana Huang. 

In this book Katie Mah is a typical Asian American in sixth grade. The kids like to pick on her and she doesn't have too many friends. While on an overnight science camp trip in sixth grade she runs from the camp and the teasing. She hates the pressure from her parents, hates the way her classmates tease her for being Chinese and not knowing everything in the white culture, and feels completely overwhelmed by it all. When it comes time to shower in the group shower at the camp she is shy and the girls tease her. At lunch they all teaser her. She runs and runs into the woods and ends up in a field  by an apple tree. After awhile she is hungry and eats an apple. Then she falls asleep. The next morning she is confused when she sees two suns. Even more confused when she meets Zeba, a centaur.  The centaur seems to know her way around and offers to help Katie, but first she has a few stops she has to make. It becomes obvious to Katie she is not on Earth anymore. There are three suns on this planet. The suns are in Alpha Centauri. Life here is very different and at the moment very dangerous. During her time with the centaurs Katie learns her own worth and gains confidence. 

I love how this book shares a look into the Chinese American life for an average sixth grader. Throughout the book Katie's own experiences are shared in her thoughts and memories. I also love the fantasy and science as well as the explanation about dragons and centaur sightings in history. This book is about a sixth grader who finds her own value and worth and reminds the reader that treating others with respect and love will help them develop into who he or she is suppose to be. Katie has to have courage as well as intelligence to survive on this new planet and she has to get over her own shyness and befriend the centaurs and become one of their community. She also feels the need to be a useful part of the community. It is an amazing tale that pulls so much together. I highly recommend it.
