Shlemiel Crooks -- a Multicultural Children's Book Day Review

Today we continue with this year's reviews of books for Multicultural Children's Book Day. The big day is Friday!! Stop by and see the links to all the reviews. There are many great books being shared that day. Today we are focusing on a fun Jewish story based on a true story. It is Shlemiel Crooks by Anna Olswanger and Paula Goodman Koz. 

In this humorous book we learn about a time crooks tried to steal the Passover wine in St. Louis in 1919. The story is hilarious and filled with religious information including things about Elijah and Passover. It is recommended for ages 7 to 10. It is sure to entertain and would also be a great book for a story time or read aloud. 

I love how a piece of Jewish American history is shared with humor and information about the Jewish history. While the saloon owner (think liquor store) was at the synagogue leading a discussion on the first Passover, crooks were breaking into his saloon and trying to steal his Passover wine from Israel. However the neighbors realized what was going on and caused enough of a commotion to scare the crooks away. Throughout the story Anna uses the spirit of Pharaoh and a talking horse as well as very entertaining curses for the crooks to entertain the reader. I truly enjoyed this book.
