The Book of Untold Stories -- a Multicultural Children's Book Day Review

Today I am going to share the first of many multicultural children's book that I am reviewing for the 9th annual Multicultural Children's Book Day. Today we are sharing The Book of Untold Stories: Fourteen Prompts to Spark the Imagination by Sherri Maret and illustrated by Thomas Hilley. This book is recommended for ages 5+.

From Me: 

Now this book is different from most books. It doesn't tell a story. Instead, it shares information about stories. Things like what a story is, setting, characters, theme, point of view and more. With each topic there is also a beautiful illustration with the simple prompt "Create your own title for this picture or use one of these...." It then gives a couple of suggestions. That is the starting point for the story. Then it is up to the reader to come up with the story. 

This book has so many uses. For kids who are not ready to write a story could just tell a story based on the picture. What story would a child create with the picture above? What story would you create? For those learning to write stories, learning about the topics involved in a story and then writing stories to go with each of the fourteen illustrations. The illustrations include diverse people, animals, and fantasy (like the dragon or sea monster in the illustrations above). The door is open to spark one's imagination in ways that aren't given often. There are things like a unicorn, a book-reading octopus, a kid astronaut, a monkey with a magic crayon that creates a door in a tree. These prompts will definitely spark imaginations and the stories will be amazing. I can see it being used for different ages and in different settings. This book would be amazing for a homeschool classroom or just a book at home to help keep kids thinking and imagining without technology and screens. It also would be great in a classroom that is working on how to write a story. The lessons and then the illustrations will give focus on different parts of each story. The first sample illustration goes with the topic of setting and the second is with the introduction of plot. Each illustration and topic leads to discussions about what makes a story.  I hope you will check it out.
