Spring has sprung! The weather is slowly starting to warm up here. I am seeing more seasonal birds in my yard. Today I am going to share with you a fun new picture book that teaches about birds and sharing. It is The Bears Shared by Kim Norman and illustrated by David Walker. It is recommended for ages 3 to 6.
From the Publisher:
A rollicking picture book that celebrates finding warmth and shelter during a springtime storm. This is the lair the bears shared.
This is the hair that came from the lair the bears shared.
This is the bird that borrowed the hair
to build a nest
in a tall, tall tree
with branches that thrashed in thunder that crashed . . .
and the story of how animals find home and family among it all!
With rhythmic text by Kim Norman and adorable artwork by David Walker, The Bears Shared is a great read-aloud for animal lovers, nature enthusiasts, and children and grown-ups with love to share.
From Me:
This is such a fun book. At first it reminded me of the annoying books kids love where you keep repeating the same things adding a bit more each time. However, this one is different, and it doesn't continue that way as much as some books do. It is rhyming and has a beat. I can see kids loving to have this one read to them over and over again.
In the story we see where the bears live and the bird gets some hair from the home and makes her nest. She raises her family in the bear fur nest in a tall, tall tree and everyone is fine until the big storm hits. The branch of the tall, tall tree comes down with the nest and babies. They all slide down the hill into the bears lair. In the end however the two mommas understand one another and the bears and birds cuddle together and stay safe during the storm.
The illustrations in this book are adorable and I love how the bears and birds get along. It is such a sweet book and the words are so fun with their rhyme and rhythm. At the end of the book is the Author's Note. There is information about birds and how humans can help birds as well as how the birds help humans. There is even a project to help share nest building materials with the wild birds. I hope you will check out this adorable book and add it to your library!
Obvious crafts to go with this book are about building bird nests and of course the project to give the birds and other wildlife nest building materials. I have done many crafts and posts about birds of different types, so be sure to check them out!
