Disclosure: I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
If you have been reading Crafty Moms Share you know that during the pandemic I fell in love with birds. I even did a series about the wildlife in our backyard which is mostly birds. I have done quite a few posts about birds and books that involve birds over the years. Today I am adding another one. It is a beautiful pop-up book from Usborne. It is Pop-Up Birds by Laura Cowan, illustrated by Giulia Lombardo and design and paper engineering by Jenny Hilborne. It is recommended for ages 5 and up.
From the Publisher:
From hovering hummingbirds and dancing pink flamingos, to diving penguins and owls spreading their wings before your very eyes, birds fly off the page in this gorgeous pop-up book. Lyrically written and informative, this book is a delight to read aloud, introducing a lovely selection of birds in a wonderful, memorable way. From Me:
This book introduces younger children to the wonder and beauty of birds. The pop-up pictures have birds moving--flying, sliding and swimming as well as just jumping out of the page. It is short and covers bee-eaters, hummingbirds, flamingos, penguins, and owls. The words are lyrical, and the illustrations are vibrant and colorful.
Each bird has a double page filled with the birds coming out of it and a lyrical description of the birds and their actions. It is not super informative, but it is sweet and perfect for the younger child who can handle the pop-ups without ripping them. It is a wonderful introduction to birds and will hopefully inspire children to learn more about them.
The book ends with the nocturnal owl, and this makes it perfect for reading before bedtime. The book would also be perfect as an introduction to a bird unit for a preschool or kindergarten class. To go with this book I would think bird crafts, and in particular flamingo crafts and activities, penguin crafts and activities, hummingbird crafts and activities, as well as owl crafts and activities. I don't have any activities or crafts for the bee-eaters.
