Today I get to share a fun short mystery book for the early middle grades. It is the third book in a series of books and to be honest I want to read the fourth book now because it ends on a cliff hanger!! The book is Bubba and Squirt's City of Bones by Sherry Ellis. It is recommended for ages 8+ and since this post is part of The Children's Book Review Book Tour for it there is a giveaway at the end!

We step into a world with magic in this novel. Bubba and Squirt's father is a magician and has disappeared performing a simple escape trick. They are worried about him. Bubba has a dream with his great-great-grandfather in it and tells Squirt they need to go to Paris. They go to their magic hole that takes them anywhere in the world that they need to be to solve a mystery. It takes them to the catacombs of Paris where they meet Simone and Jacques who help them on their quest though Simone keeps saying she should take them to the police. Throughout the story there are mean men that seem to show up wherever the group goes. The chapters flip back and forth between Bubba and Squirt as the narrator.
The story is well written and pulls the readers in. Even not having read the first two books I did not feel lost in the story. Simone is the only adult in their group and behaves appropriately always wanting to care for the younger ones. She also wants to show off her city and takes them to see the Eiffel Tower as well as visit museums as that is part of the quest. It is an engaging story and gives cultural references as well. I love how we learn about the different museums and what they look like. It is a story that kids will love. I felt like I learned a bit about Paris that I did not know before. The mystery is also very interesting and pulls in the magic world.
This is a book kids will enjoy reading on their own or reading in class as part of unit studying mysteries or Paris. It also would be interesting to study about the catacombs and look at what they were and are used for. To go with this book I would suggest a study of Paris and perhaps a Paris-themed craft.
