From Me:
This is just a fun book! Dragon is trying to be well, a dragon. He wants to be fierce and frightening. He wants to soar and take over the world. However, every time he roars it turns into a sneeze. Phoenix keeps trying to get the dragon to rest, drink tea, have soup, etc. Dragon however doesn't want to quit. After all he is a dragon.
The dragon and phoenix are drawn in a Chinese style. The book is so fun for anyone who loves dragons or for the kid who doesn't like to quit or slow down when he/she gets sick. The phoenix is the voice of reason and in my opinion, the parent. I love that it is two mystical creatures as the characters in the book.
The dragon wants to keep on being fierce and scaring the world, but his sneezes are getting worse and worse. The phoenix is trying to get the dragon to rest and take care of himself. The words are fun, and the illustrations are beautiful. As a mother it is conversation that sounds a bit familiar. As a high school teacher the words especially sound familiar. Even after the pandemic we have to remind students to stay home when sick or at least mask up.
I can imagine young children laughing at the interchange between the dragon and phoenix and at the sneezes. I think this would be a great book to read aloud to one child or a group. I can definitely see it becoming a favorite for some kids. For older kids it would be interesting to discuss the Chinese culture in the illustrations. As you can see in the illustration above there is a traditional Chinese house. I hope you will check it out.
