It has been a while since I have needle felted. The last time I did I made a picture and not a 3-D object, but I pulled out my needle felting supplies this week and started making adorable baby animals with the help of today's book. The book is Irresistible Felted Baby Animals: Needle Felted Cuties from Puppies to Pandas by Sachiko Susa. I will admit my needle felting skills need more practice!!

The animals in this book are so adorable!! I wanted to make them all!! However, I have limited colors currently and I definitely need some more practice! The instructions in the book are great. I love that they give you actual size illustrations to check your shape and size for different body parts. I started with the penguin and besides not having a light enough grey I am happy with how it turned out.
I bought a pack of crystal eyes ages ago and of course cannot find them, so I made eyes with wool. I think the crystal eyes would have been so much better!! I love the variety of animals in this book and some of the animals have different sizes or positions. The penguin has four sizes for the torso and head. The pages give amounts of roving and colors as well as the actual size illustrations and sometimes actual size from different views. The book also has a completed example from different views.
The penguin was one of the first animals and the ones in the beginning are definitely the easier ones. The only thing I felt was lacking was how to make the muzzles. You can tell on my panda and lion cub that I struggled with this.
Again, I didn't have my crystal eyes and need to look for them. My muzzle and legs are lacking a bit. Here is a sample page of the pandas and the different positions you can make.
Mine is nowhere as cute! I will have to practice some more. My legs and muzzles need some help. But it is still cute! Here is the lion cub I made. Again, needs help in the legs and muzzle!
I am really enjoying this book and am using the pictures as inspiration to keep practicing my skills and hopefully improve! This book has such adorable animals. I hope you will check it out and get needle felting this summer! I wish I had made these when Hazel was younger for her zoo playmat!
