ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Frank Payne’s energy and enthusiasm are contagious, so dog breeds such as beagles and Labradors are a perfect fit for him. He is an avid hunter, tennis player, and fan of all things James Madison University. Frank is also active in his community and enjoys exploring new ventures—from owning racehorses to oyster farming.

Frank is vice president and a minority owner of PD Brooks Company Inc., a traffic control company in Richmond, Virginia. He lives in Richmond with his wife, Caren, and their two dogs: Billy, the beagle, and River, the black Labrador retriever. On July 1, 2022, Frank adopted Billy the beagle from Richmond Animal Care Control (RACC). Billy was one of over four thousand beagles rescued from Envigo and adopted across the country. RACC was instrumental in protecting and fostering many of the beagles in Virginia.

From Me:

This book is so sweet. Webster the Beagle goes to the river with his owner and sees many different types of river animals. He loves checking on the ospreys nesting there. He helps his human get oysters, blue crabs, and rockfish in different seasons. There is information about each of these animals in the book. It is a wonderful story that kids will enjoy. Webster's adventures on Rappahannock River are interesting. I love how the book shares about the various animals Webster sees and his owner get from the river. After the book shares about Webster's adventure with the animal there is a "Did You Know?" about the animal. It gives STEM facts with the fun story. Webster, like so many dogs, loves to check out the different critters he sees.

I love how Frank captures Webster's excitement on the various trips to the river. He manages to capture the feel of a dog happy to be alive. The reader can envision him checking each of the critters out and jumping around with the excitement of a puppy. The words and illustrations capture the adventures and share with the reader so much. I can see this book being a favorite at story time whether at home or school. It will work well to introduce the animals in the river as well as a dog's life. It will be fun for kids to learn more about the animals and perhaps find other resources to explore them.

Craft Round-Up:

Since Webster shares some of his favorite activities and things to see on the river, I thought it would be fun to share some crafts to go with each of them. He shares his love of checking on the ospreys, helping with getting the oysters, blue crabs and rockfish which are also striped bass. I found some fun osprey crafts and activities like these at Lansingtown and at Earth Rangers. Some fellow bloggers shared some oyster, blue crab, and rockfish crafts as well. Be sure to check out 3 Boys and a Dog's Maryland coloring pages which includes a blue crab and a rockfish. For another adorable blue crab craft check out this one here
