Disclosure: I was sent a digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own. I am working with The Children's Book Review and P.E. Shadrick to bring you this post.
When Hazel was young, I loved telling her stories. Since we started at a Waldorf school, storytelling was very important. Stories could entertain, teach lessons and so much more. Today I am sharing book that has a grandmother telling a story to her granddaughter as she works the tangles out of the granddaughter's hair. The book is Lisbeth and the Littering Ladybugs by P.E. Shadrick and illustrated by Maya Penzlik.

This is the kind of story we loved when Hazel was young. Hazel had long hair when she was young, and it often would get tangled. She eventually cut it and donated it twice. In this sweet story a young girl wakes up with her brother and grandmother. They are excited for the day together. Lisbeth's hair however is very tangled. Her grandmother begins to brush it out and tells her a story about what must have happened overnight. The ladybugs decided to throw a gala. They had silky decorations which of course were Lisbeth's hair. They had costumes. They had a great time but didn't clean up after themselves and left their streamers all tied up. Lisbeth asks her grandmother why the ladybugs wouldn't clean up after themselves and her grandmother tells her how sometimes we have to take responsibility for others and clean up after them. Lisbeth thinks about how she likes to help others and also decides to brush her hair at night before bed so hopefully it won't be so tangled in the morning.
This book is sweet and fun. It is a fantasy, and it has that feeling of fairies to me. The ladybugs have a fabulous gala. They party it up in Lisbeth's hair. It provides a fun explanation for the morning tangles as well as the message about cleaning up after oneself and sometimes others. It also has messages about spending time with family. The kids are so excited to have a day with their grandmother. Lisbeth thinks about how lucky she is to have her grandmother who will give her help when she needs it.
This book just has so many wonderful messages throughout it. It is definitely a bit of a fantasy story for young girls. The ladybugs don't have manners to have cleaned up after themselves. The kids are excited and thankful for their grandmother. Lisbeth thinks about how she likes helping others. Lisbeth decides she should brush her hair at night as well as in the morning to solve the problem. There are great messages in the story that all kids need to hear and learn. I love that ladybugs that are often seen as, well, ladies don't have manners in this book. It is a nice twist. The illustrations are beautiful and colorful. It has a bit of a magical feel.
