Unraveled -- Keeper of the Lost Cities Book 9.5

Disclosure: I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Have you heard of the Keeper of the Lost Cities Series by Shannon Messenger? It is a young adult fantasy series. I hadn't read any of them although Hazel did a long time ago. Today however I get to share with you the newest book in the series. Shannon Messenger calls it book 9.5 because it gives some back story to the overall story. The book is called Unraveled. The suggested ages by customers is 11 and up.

From the Publisher:

The past and present unravel into staggering truths in this can’t-miss installment of the New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling Keeper of the Lost Cities series told entirely from Keefe’s point of view.

Please be careful. Please be happy. And PLEASE forget all about me. It’ll be better for everyone that way.

Those were the last words Keefe Sencen wrote to Sophie Foster before he ran away to the Forbidden Cities. He didn’t want to leave, but it was the only way to keep his friends safe while he figured out how to control his scary new powers and searched for answers about his past.

What he found was so much more than adventures in Humanland.

Where did he go? What did he do? And who did he meet while the rest of his friends worked to solve the mystery of Stellarlune? The answers go far beyond anything anyone could have ever imagined and give Keefe the power to change his destiny.

From Me:

Now to read book number 9.5 in a series and not have read any of the previous books can be tough. After all I didn't know any of the history of the series however this book was easy to get into. There were times I wished I had read the other books first but for the most part the book drew me in. Shannon Messenger did a wonderful job of explaining the past within the story, so it was easy to understand the overall story. Honestly, I want to read the rest of the series because this book was so well written and so interesting.

The book is about Keefe's adventure into Humanland. Keefe is an elf and needs to escape his world to hide from his mother while he learns to control his new abilities as well as figure some things out. He knows there is going to be a huge battle with his mother soon, but first he has to figure things out and make sure he knows how to use his abilities, so he doesn't hurt someone he loves. He hangs on to glimpses of past memories that his mother had erased while he tries to figure out what she is up to and what she has done. He struggles to figure out the human world but after some help from his father and strangers he finds his groove. Then to his surprise he finds someone he thought was dead. It is someone he doesn't trust, and he is worried that he may do something to his world or report to his mother what he is up to, so he forces him to come with him. Slowly they become friends, and they find ways to have some fun while figuring out Keefe's abilities and life.

The book's ending surprised me. I won't ruin it, but it was not what I was expecting. This book makes me want to pick up some of the other books and definitely the next one when it comes out. It is a fun fantasy book that has interesting characters and definite wonder and action. I hope you will check it out!
