Hedgehogs Don't Wear Underwear -- Book Review & Hedgehog Craft Roundup

Disclosure: I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Something that is important for kids and really everyone to learn is how to be themselves. It is important not to be afraid to show your true colors. Each of us needs to be able to live as ourselves. Today I am sharing an adorable book with this message. The book is Hedgehogs Don't Wear Underwear by Marissa Valdez. It is recommended for ages 3 to 6. At the end of the post there is a hedgehog craft roundup to go with the book!

From the Publisher:

From #1 New York Times-bestselling Marissa Valdez comes a hilariously zany and uproariously fun story of an underwear-obsessed hedgehog — perfect for fans of Dragons Love Tacos and Something's Wrong!

Jacques is a little hedgehog with a BIG secret — he loves wearing underwear! But the hedgehog world has rules . . . You see, hedgehogs eat grubs. They make nests. They snort with their sniffly snouts. They do NOT. WEAR. UNDERWEAR. So what's a critter to do about his undercover love of underpants?

Will Jacques muster the bravery he needs to fully embrace himself and share his love of tighty-whities with the world?

Get ready to fall head over heinie for this hilarious and unforgettable tale of identity, self-acceptance — and undies.

From Me:

Jacques is an adorable hedgehog who seems to have an artistic air to him. He shares his big secret with us. He likes to wear underwear. In fact, the underwear makes him feel like himself. He is however afraid to tell the other hedgehogs. He is worried they will exile him, throw garbage at him or laugh at him. When he works up the courage to do it, his confession opens the road for the other hedgehogs to share their secrets. It is a sweet book full of humor and fun while sharing an important message.

I love that the book has a French theme as well as a bit of an artistic theme. Jacques imagines the other hedgehogs in green and has artwork around him in some of the pages. Plus, there is French spoken by several of the animals. The animals seem to speak both English and French.

I love that Jacques has friends who are not hedgehogs that show him support over his underwear choice. The illustrations are fun, and the storyline is so cute and funny. Kids are going to love this. I can see this book being read aloud and kids finding it hysterical. Plus, the other hedgehogs are very supportive and all in with accepting their differences well except for maybe Paul's. You have to read the book to understand that. Let's just say this will easily become a favorite for story times at home, at the library or in the classroom.

Seriously this book is hysterical but also shares an important message. I love the different things the hedgehogs are into and even those could be discussed more in depth with older kids. It is a perfect book to read, gift or have in a classroom. Help each child find his or her unique thing.
